Don't Let Scammers Catch You Off Guard
We've recently received reports from members who have been contacted by scammers pretending to be WestStar Credit Union's Fraud Department.
These fraudulent calls and text messages are designed to create a sense of urgency, often claiming there has been suspicious activity on your account. Their goal is to convince you to share personal information, online banking credentials, verification codes, debit card information, or other sensitive account details.
Unfortunately, today's technology allows scammers to make it appear as though they're calling or texting from a legitimate WestStar phone number. This practice, known as caller ID spoofing, can make it difficult to tell whether a call or text is genuine. Remember these important tips:
- WestStar will never contact you to ask for your online banking username or password.
- We will never ask for one-time verification codes sent by text or email.
- We will never ask you to provide your debit card PIN or other confidential account credentials over the phone or by text.
If you receive a call or text that feels suspicious, even it if appears to come from our phone number, do not provide any personal information. Scammers continue to find new ways to target consumers, but a few moments of caution can go along way toward protecting your accounts and personal information.
